Making The Most of This Autumn | 20 Fun and Easy Fall Activities

on October 05, 2020

Introduction

Yes, we know, things are weird right now. That doesn’t mean you can’t have fun this fall, though! We’ve put together 20 fun ideas to try out this autumn.

We made sure to include options for any level of caution you may be taking as a result of COVID-19, so you can still get in the spirit while keeping yourself and others safe.

Pick-up a Cozy Hobby

With all the time we’ll be spending indoors this fall, it’s a great idea to get comfortable. Try out some new hobbies to learn a new skill and get extra cozy without breaking the bank.

You can pick up knitting, or learn to make a beautiful quilt. If you have a sewing machine, you can even try your hand at making some loungewear. See some getting-started guides here, here, and here.

Have a Movie Marathon At Home

Sticking with the theme of getting cozy, cuddling up at home for a movie marathon with family or friends will keep you warm and comfortable inside. Throw on your favorite pair of pajamas, gather your best snacks, and wrap up in your warmest blankets. See a list of fall-themed movies here, and a list of great movie series to check out here.

Take a Drive

This one is pretty self-explanatory! You can do this with family, some friends, or just spend some time alone. Explore your surroundings and enjoy the view.

Depending on your state, you can even enjoy the changing leaves. See a helpful fall foliage map that will tell you when autumn foliage will peak near you here.

Plan a Fun Day Trip

Get your family or a few close friends together and get away for the day. Whether it’s to a nearby beach, lake, mountains, or a fun town, grab some snacks (and maybe some picnic supplies or blankets), hop in the car, and spend some quality time together.

Drive-in Movies

Even though traditional movie theaters may not be an option due to COVID-19 restrictions, it’s still a great time to go to the movies. Drive-ins still allow that fun movie-going excursion, without the risk of close exposure to others. Look up “drive-in theaters near me” to find your closest option for a night of fun outside the house.

Drive-through Haunted House

Just like movie theaters, traditional haunted houses aren’t looking too promising this year. Instead, try out a drive-through option. Search “drive-through haunted house near me” and check out the possibilities to get spooky this October.

Have a Picnic

Planning a fun picnic with some friends or family is a great way to get outside while remaining socially distant. The best part is, you can make it as elaborate as you want (or not!). Put together a meal yourself, or grab some take-out to make it even easier. All you need is a picnic blanket and some grass, and you’ll be good to go.

Do a Backyard Campout

Another great way to spend time with your family is getting together for a backyard campout. You’ll enjoy all the fun of a night camping, with the bonus of a bathroom nearby! If you don’t have a fire pit, it’s easy to make smores over a gas stove. Set up a tent and get to stargazing.

Apple Picking

Another fun activity that will get you outdoors, apple picking is a great option to celebrate the fall. Fresh apples will go great with apple cider, or in a pie (*hint hint*). Check out your local orchards and try it out.

Go Hiking

Simple, we know, but it will get you outside and with many gyms closed, it’s a fun and easy way to stay active. Enjoy the scenery and bring some friends along to appreciate the beautiful outdoors.

Take Photos

The fall season provides a great opportunity for some beautiful photos. Get some shots of the changing leaves, or do a fun photoshoot with some friends. You can take advantage of the beauty and memorialize this great time of year.

Make Apple Cider

Fall is the best time to warm up with some hot apple cider. It’s easy to make, and a fun activity to share with loved ones. If you’re of age, you can even spike it with a little bit of rum for some extra warmth. Try this great recipe (and just leave out the rum if you prefer).

Make Pumpkin Spice Lattes

Try making a fall classic at home this year. This is a fun twist on your typical coffee, and easy to do yourself. If you’re feeling generous, you can take this as an opportunity to spice up another coffee-drinkers day with a sweet treat. Try this recipe.

Bake a Pie

Baking a pie is admittedly the option that will take the most effort on this list. But, if you’re up for the challenge, pie is a classic fall treat, and you have tons of flavors to choose from -- our favorite is pumpkin. Remember, practice makes perfect!

Start a Book Club

Starting a book club is a great way to keep your mind stimulated and get social when you’re stuck indoors. This option is also COVID-friendly!

If you don’t feel comfortable seeing friends, keep your meetings virtual. It’s a great way to keep in touch with friends and have something fun to talk about. Here’s a list of book options to get you started.

Make Candles

Get crafty by making your fall candles at home. You can choose your favorite fall scents and incorporate them into your candles. You can use any container you want to fit your theme. See a step-by-step guide to getting started here.

Decorate for Fall

Speaking of getting crafty, there are tons of DIY projects you can work on to transform your home for the fall. Spending time working on a theme is a fun project to do indoors to get yourself in the mood for the fall. You can create some decorations yourself, or check out your local shops to pick up decorations. Get inspired here.

Pumpkin Carving

With Halloween coming up, it’s time to get your jack-o-lanterns ready to spook your neighbors. Work on a classic design, or if you really want to test your skills, try a witch or a ghost. See some step-by-step guides and stencils here, here, and here.

Write Handwritten Notes to Your Loved Ones

It’s never a bad time to tell those you care about how much you love them. You can keep it simple with just a straightforward message, or you can spend some time decorating and creating a personalized card. You’ll feel good and so will they!

Create a Gratitude Journal

Though Thanksgiving is still over a month away, this season always ushers in thoughts of gratitude. For most people, this year hasn’t been easy, and it can be especially tough to remember the things we’re grateful for. Appreciating the good things, even if they’re small, can help center us and keep us moving forward. You can practice gratitude in any journal with these tips, or you can try a book with templates like this one
